Rails serves up modern contemporary Australian cuisine at its best. The fare is full, flavoursome and immaculately presented. Combine the knockout menu with outstanding service and smart interior design and Rails has given fine dining in our region the kick in the pants it needed. We begin our meal with barbecuse duck pancake rolls served with mint, coriander, cucumber and shallot salad with a sprinkling of hoisin sauce ($17.50). It’s a perfect introduction - the kind of delicious flavour hit that has the diner begging for more. Our mains arrive and we swoon over our orders. The Moroccan-crusted Western Australian lamb rump served with a parsnip, pumpkin and date cous cous, sauteed spinach, mint and coriander pesto ($28.50) is superb. Hearty and tender, the lamb is simply a pleasure to eat. Meanwhile, the ocean trout fillet with capsicum, spinach, potato and zucchini lasagne, parched asparagus, sea scallop and salsa verde ($28) combines light and fresh seafood with alluring mediterranean flavours. Chef Matt De Luca must be commended on conjuring an original menu with suitable flair. Somehow, we make room for a mixed dessert platter for two ($33) and what a treat. Apple and rhubarb crumble, strawberry trifle, a flourless chocolate and almond pudding, and a slice of biscotti have us full to the brim and completely won over by Rails.
